Default 84 ATC110 - Timing

A few more questions about the 110. After a rebuild of the carb and a new primary coil things are a LOT better.

How do I check the rpm? Can't get my automotive dwell/rpm meter to work. Maybe I'm not connecting it right. Got the timing light to work and I have the "F" dead center in the window - but don't know what my RPM is. So I really don't know where my timing is at 1700 rpm.

Runs smooth but ends up idling too high after it gets good and warm. If I dial it back I have a real hard time starting it and keeping it running when it's cold. I found that the exhaust is cracked about half way down. Not sure if this is contributing to the problem or not.

I'm almost there with a little more help.
