Default carburetor problem :(

I put the carb together with the owners manual guidelines and re-installed it and made sure the petcock was on 'on' and that the start button was on 'run' and the darn thing wouldn't even turn over? and yesterday, before I 'rebuilt' the carb it was running just fine, but idling cruddy.

any hints to what might be wrong?

Thanks,

Monk

Before removing the pilot screw, did you record the number of turns in before the screw seats lightly?

Turn the pilot screw clockwise until it seats lightly and back it out to the specification listed below:
2 1/4 turns out.
This is an initial setting prior to the final pilot screw adjustment.
Warm the engine up to operating temp.
Stop the engine and connect a tachometer.
Start the engine and adjust the idel speed with the throttle stop screw.

Idle speed: 1,400 plus/minus 100rpm
Turn the pilot screw clockdwise slowly until the engine stops, and then back it our 1 turn.
Start the engine and readjust the idle speed with the throttle stop screw, if necessary.

High altitued adjustment:
The carb must be adjusted for high altitude riding (above 6,000 ft/1,800m).
High altitude settings:
5,000 ft (1,500M) min.
The standard jet should be repaced with the high altitude type(#90) FYI..

I took this straight out of my manual... I hope it was useful.

Ok, I did the 2 and 1/4 turns out, and then started it, warmed it up for 10 minutes turn the screw clockwise, but the engine never died.

what could be the problem?

Thanks,

Monk

What is bieng described looks great
If at this time you have engine warm and can turn pilot/airfuel screw all way in and still runs
It is to rich or to much fuel at idle
What position is your metering rod
I would lower it one knotch
this will lean at idle and also at lower engine speeds
I found same issue on my 185S
Not sure of your altitude
But rjdad has a point if at hi altitude change jet I believe hi altitude is above 5000 feet
I would first lower needle and get AF adjust
then also do spark plug color check

The manual is a great guide but each engine does adjust a little different
Just my thoughts
Thanks
Ray

i dont know what a metering rod is, is that the throttle needle? Also I live in southeast texas, so I doubt I am high altitude.

so should I drain the carb bowl, turn the pilot screw say only 1.5 turns out and then adjust the throttle screw?

Thanks,

Monk
