Default Big Red Head

I'm looking to replace the top end of my 1985 250es big red. because its smoking blue smoke.Someone mention that i might replace the cam chain,its not not or making noise.My service manual doesnt show how to replace the chain but the guides,Any help?

the blue smoke has nothing to do with the cam chain. its the valve guides. get a good manual or work book for you ATC and it will most likely explain how to do the valve guides.

no problem. my ATC needs valve guides as well. just BE CAREFUL with the timing. while the engine is apart do not turn it and don't let anyone else turn it. i had that happen and i had to take the head off and rotate it 3 times to get the timing spot on. it does run now though. thank god.

well that sucks ,my manual told me to turn it over to get the cam chain gear bolts off.

When I did the rings on my 200x I just used a piece of wire to hold the cam sprocket onto the chain. Then tied it up to keep tension on it and had no trouble

just don't turn it over while the head and flywheel arent connected. if you turn one, turn the other so they stay in sync.

Gotcha ,hey is it ok that i took the cam chain sprocket off and using a wire to hold the chain.so when i get a new cam what do i do to get everything synced? or tdc?
