1983 185s carb/choke adjustment
#1
Hi All, I have a 1983 185s. It has a 3 position choke lever, Off, Half & Full. If I open the choke to full, it will not start. If I open the choke half it starts on 1st pull, idles perfectly. I turn the choke off after a few seconds, it continues it idle perfectly, couldn't ask for it to be any better. Now when giving gas or reving, either in neutral or in gear, if I give it a quick shot it will stall, but if I gradually give it gas it revs up no problem. This is a pain because you cannot start off quick, it has to be gradual. Can this problem and the funny way the choke works be related? Any ideas? As far as I know when the engine is stone cold it should start or at least fire on full choke. I should also be able to snap the throttle quickly without it stalling. I should add that when it stalls it starts right back up with one pull, no choke & continues to idle perfectly. Any ideas would be a great help, Thanks!
Just to add, I have installed a new NGK Iridium spark plug & new UNI air filter, did not make any difference to the problem.

Have you tried driving it around on half choke until it warms up then un-choke it? I have to do that on 200s. If that doesn't work try adjusting the carb. Let it warm up. Set the idle to the correct speed(approx 1200 rpm) and turn the mixture screw in until it stalls then back it out one turn from there. The initial adjustment should be turn it in until it lightly bottoms then back it out 2 turns. The 185 should be the same as the 200s. Make sure you turn the mixture screw and not the idle speed screw on the side of the carb. The mixture screw should be on the back side of the carb pointing down along side the bowl. It is the biggest pain trying to adjust it in that position. I ended up cutting off a screw driver. Hope this helps!
