Buying a 3 wheeler
#1
I am lookin at ATV's. I found a couple of 3 wheelers and was wondering if they are worth thinkin about. I know they are said to be dangerious but are they really? I am well into middle age and don't ride at 80 mph!!I want a machine to take me hunting, fishing and to ride a few trails. Can you get parts for these things? I'm thinkin mostly mid 80's Honda's. How do they do in the woods, snow and a bit of mud? I would like to be able to put some racks on em to be able to haul my huntin stuff to the stand and drag a deer or two out. If you could find one with low hours and in good shape for a reasonable price are they worth it?
Thanks for the help

I'm 18 and grew up on 3 wheelers, first one was a 70, then 110, 185s,'84 200x,'85 200x, '85 350x, '86 350x. I now only have the '86 350x and the '85 200x. Those are the racing 3 wheelers, if you want to hunt and drive slower don't buy a 200x, 350x or 250r.
You would want a Big red or a 250sx. The later year big reds had suspension like a 250sx. They arn't dangerours as long as you use your head. I've rolled only about 3 times and didn't get hurt either time, I wear a helmet.
I think Honda's are pretty easy to find parts for. Although they can be expensive from the dealers, but I guess it is even that way for the 4 wheelers that they make these days.
They do pretty well in snow and mud, expecially with some good tires like blackwaters. I think the big reds and maybe the 250sx's come with a rear rack.
Thing is that the 250sx and big red are hard to find under $1500 in good shape. Sometimes you come accross a good deal, other times you have to pay but it is worth it.
I have some links to pages that have pictuers of these 3 wheelers, if your interested in that let me know and I will post it.

It would be well worth it.I knew a guy who had a bigred 200,he had some big racks he mad put on the back on the front as well.He could haul all kinds of stuff with it,I had a 200S and it did really well in mud,I dunno bout snow, cuz i live in phx but it did pull pretty good,I pulled 2 yamaha golf carts from the desert at 1 time with no problem,my cousins were on them too. Also,it was only a 200,auto clutch,a 250 would probly be even better,I now have a 200X.I have never flipped my bikes, and I ride pretty hard too.I think it would be a good idea

The four wheeler would be a better choice for what you want to do. How ever a three wheeler if you aren't going fast and are very carefull you may never come off a trike, but for going back and forth to a deer stand a trike is fine. The bigred would be the choice for you, the 250 had good shocks and is extremely smooth riding but with low presure tires you hardly even need shocks.
A three wheeler will do quite well in a BIT of mud today my dad and I were riding in some mud (my dad has a 4wd quad) my dads quad almost got stuck then I got stuck imposible if it weren't for my dads bike and rope. In the snow the trikes do very well except for when they start skidding uncontrollably (which scared me but I did'nt turn over) I do quite a bit of trail ridding on my 200x. Don't get going real fast on a trike untill your real use to them they turn over real easy in a turn. If you have the money go for a quad they are all around better and are alot newer too. Hope this helps

Ive had numerous ATC's in the last years . Ive never been hurt on them . I do not jump or do crazy stunts either . Just remember , An ATC does not have a mind of its own . It will only do what the rider controls it to do . Dont blame the machine for human error or ignorance . If youre hunting you may want an electric start . Ive never known anyone with a SX , but it sounds like that is what youd be happy with .
