clutch creeping
#1
We just put the new clutch in the 250R (85), and now it is creeping when it is in first gear with the clutch pulled all the way in. It is adjusted to where it should be, so that should not be a problem. Did not get a chance to drive it far, but when the clutch is released, it seems to move just fine.
What did we forget to do/move/adjust/whatever???????
Please help, need to go riding next week.

You say it's adjusted to where it should be, what do you mean by that? If you've never replaced the cable, consider doing it now. Your 16 year old cable has probably stretched quite a bit and now that you have replaced the clutch your cable is outside of the adjustable tolerances. Have you tried extending both adjusters, top and bottom to their maximum? or do you have it adjusted the same way as your old clutch? My '82 250R has the same problem, not so severe, and my cable has stretched so much I can't adjust it any more. I don't know how old the cable is, but i've got to replace it.
Just make sure you don't overadjust you clutch or you will burn it out in no time because it will never release completely.
Hope this helps some.

I agree with FIN, in that the cable may have streatched, but another question is....what is where "it should be?" I have never adjusted it that way. I would adjust it where it works.
Another problem you may have overlooked. Your new clutch has more meat on it may not release fully. This is a chronic problem for the older 250R motors. The ball bearing setup on the pushrod is faulty. It tends to bind up and causes the pushrod to "drill" into the pivot lever (what you connect your clutch cable to). It grinds away at the pivot lever and creates a groove in it, so your clutch doesn't adjust fully. I would either compensate by adjusting your cable more or get the 89 clutch upgrade kit. I bought it and it works great. It is only about $60 and it will help fix your problem. Of course you will have to spring for the pivot rod too ($35), but your problem will be fixed.

250R_Man:
Can you tell me more about the 89 clutch upgrade kit. will this fit on an '82 250R ? Do you have a part number? My local dealer is an idiot and if he can't find something easily he just says it's discontinued.
Thanks
Fin
