My brother owns what we think is an 85' 200X. Untill recently, we thought it was a 250r, but now we think it is a 200X. What is the real difference between the two other than 50cc's? Thanks.

 

In honda model numbers, X means 4 stroke. R means 2-stroke. 200x and 250r are totally different. No parts that I know of will interchange. Also the R will have a red plastic gas tank. The X will have a white steel, same as 350X. The swingarm will be gray on the X and gold on the R. The wheels should be silver on the X and gold on the R. The X is air cooled and the R has radiators. There are also many other differences. Hope this helps.

 

Not only that, but the R will pull a 200x backwards faster than a 200x will go forward under it's own power. Nothing wrong with the 200X, just two whole different power levels. The 84 and earlier R's are air cooled and do have metal gas tanks.

 

'83-'85 200X was a 5 speed and had power.

'86-'87 200X was a 6 speed and had much more power. Totally different engine than the '83-'85.

The serial number is behind the headlight on the steering head. You can use the first 7 numbers of that serial number to determine what he has.

200X--JH3TB05
250R--JH3TB06

You can use the 9th character of the serial number to determine the year model. The following year model codes apply whether it is a 200X or a 250R
D-1983
E-1984
F-1985
G-1986
H-1987

This is the easiest way to determine what you have considering that most three wheelers these days have a variety of mixed parts added over the years. You can't always go by appearance and colors.

 

what about the 350x u got any codes or good information that is out of the ordinary on them bad boys. i am curious.you are smart guy.

Engine number..TE08E-5000001 thru 5******

1986 Honda ATC350X....
Serial number..JH3TE0806GM100001 thru M******
Engine number..TE08E-5100001 thru 5******

The only differences recognized by Honda between the two year models are body plastic color only. The same engines were shared amongst both years.

The characters that I have in Bold are the characters that designate it from an '85 to an '86.

Not quite as interesting as determining something like a ....ATC185..LOL
