New to Flattrack racing have some ?

I think I'm gonna try some local flattrack racing and and I have a few questions. What is the optimum tire for the dirt? How about chassis set up? My quad is set up for mx and dunes and would like to make it flattrack ready fairly easy. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

They make lowering devises.Sway bar a must!
Most run the soft tires (SD-28?) They will last till you go fast hehe BEWARE you will hear tire horror stories (fast wear) and yes they do wear, but they can and will last a season (usually). Mine has lasted a long time, but I'm slow
Still waiting for the ultimate quad eh?! Well go get the new Honda and let us all knw how it compares to the 70 others
I hear that Tim Farr was doing 100ft. triples on the stock shocks!

Thanks for the info. Sandneck, the races are in Price at the fairgrounds. The races are scheduled every other weekend starting in May. I just find out, and I will pass on more info as I receive some. I'm not into bashing any quad and I 'm definitely not bashing Honda, it's just not the quad for me at the moment. It will be a great quad I'm sure.

The other posts have got you started in the right direction. If you are new to flat trackin' and want to race on a low budget the minimum would be to get some American Racer SD33 compound tires all the way around. Next, get some front shock lowering brackets and a rear lowering strut to drop that bad boy. Get the seat down to 27 inches from the ground and the handle bars about 38 inches from the ground(without you sitting on the machine). Take off every part on the quad that is not necessary to make it run or handle to save weight. Wheel spacers are a must to widen the quad out the cheap way or get new wider a arms and axle. Play with the air pressures and the ride height. Get a sway bar with adjustability to displace some weight and make that quad hook up. Before you put a dollar in the motor or a new exhaust pipe play with the handling. You will be surprised what a good handling flat track quad will do against poor handling monster motored quad. Oh, almost forgot. You can make that quad even more competitive without spending a ton of money by playing with the front and rear sprocket gearing.

Thanks for all the input, I really appreciate all the replys. I'm more of an mx and dune rider and just wanted to try a couple flattrack races. I have wheel spacers on the YZF and will soften the suspension up a little. I will either run offset front wheels or get a set of arms and a steering stabilizer. Like you said experementing with different gearing will come into play for sure. I used to roadrace motorcycles and I know a little about cornering speed. Racing is won in the corners in my opinion. Anyone can hold the throttle open down the straights. The seat height on my YFZ right now is just over 31 inches. I will play with the preload front and rear and go from there. Thanks again.

First, what is your weight? Are you going to be running the 450? Are you going to invest in a swaybar? Is the swingarm and everything stock? How big are the tracks that you are running? What kind of dirt?
