Ok. My son is five years old and will be six next spring of 2005. Located in Ohio. Please provide links/places/numbers if possible.

1.) Where is some of the racing done at here in Ohio?

2.) What classes (age bracket and size of quad) are available?

3.) Things I should keep in mind...safety, and so on...

4.) What are the typical expenses I should consider?

Well, he's turning 6 hrm.. Sounds a little young for a blaster, so I say go with maybe an LT 80 and get him used to power that it has, and then upgrade pipe/clutch, carb, etc.. Not sure of any racing there, but for racing you will most likely need helmet, tether kill switch, nerf bars (id highly reccomend them), boots, gloves, riding pants/shirt, and chest protecter and maybe even a neck brace. Though there are many other people on this forum with much more knowledge than me, just giving you a start.

he has to run something under a 90... its the law...
and the normal safty stuff like mentioned above...
exspenses? probably between 20-25$ per class he runs... than gate fee's for everyone that goes with you... your prolly gonna be looking at around 75-100$ depening on track prices.

 

PLEASE start this youth out on a 50cc machine. The DRR is a good choice.

 

he is almost 6... a 50 will be too small in no time. not everybody has the cash to up size a quad every year as there child progresses...
but i will assure you.. he will out grow a 50 fast.

 

Well, some 50's are the same size as a 90, some are smaller.. The motor speed is what I'm concerned about. these new 50's can go pretty good. And when he actually does outgrow the 50cc power, 50cc hop ups or 70cc kits are readilly available. On some models, the 90cc cylinders bolt up.

I put my youngest on a 80 when he was too young. Sure, "I" thought it wasn't a problem. He directly ran into my dads car. He was then afraid to ride the 80. I got him a 50. It was his size and speed. He loved it and in a cpl. years he did grow out of it.

You will see in the rules of most santioning bodies that your child cannot race an 80/90 cc machine at his age.
Any AMA/ATVA santioned event, 80/90cc's require an age of 8. Most local circiuts won't let you either. THANK GOD!
