The Harescrambles that Iv'e raced in have been 4-8 mile tracks through woods, fire roads, creek beds etc. and usually last any where from 1-2 hours long. Whoever sanctions the race determines what type of classes there are for the event. The start takes place in a field, with each class in its own row and each class gets its own flag to start. During the race you stop at a check point to give the score keeper your number so that lap can be recorded. the winner is determined by the number of laps and position they are in when the time limit is reached.

Some HS races have portion of the race on MX tracks as well. Makes for very interesting racing.
