Well the first piece of advice I would give is this: Always keep the wheels moving. Don't stop to rest, if you get hung up, get the bike out and get moving immediately. Even if your tired and your arms are pumped so bad that your can barely hang on, going slow is better than sitting still. Second, go over your bike and check all the bolts, chain tension, tire pressure, make sure your grips are glued tight and wired, brake pads (rear especially), etc. Make sure you know how far you can go on a tank of fuel. As a rough estimate, in normal woods for a harescramble, you can use 1 mile every 3 minutes as a guide to guess how many laps you will run. So, a 5 mile track and a 2 hour race, you should figure that you'll run a minimum of 8 laps / 40 miles. Use this estimate to gauge whether or not you will have to stop for fuel. Make sure that you have spare goggles and gloves waiting in your pits in case you need to change them during the race. Lastly, don't ride over your head. Find a pace that is comfortable to you and stick with it. As you gain experience, you'll be able to push the envelope, but for your first few races, finishing is more important.
Good Luck!!!
