best quad to start with ?
#1
I am looking for your opinion. What is the best quad to have for a performance machine? I will define the qualities I need in order. First it has to be dependable. It needs to be very good in woods and trails. Third straight line speed. What quad would you start with? what would be the performance up grades to get it quicker yet still be dependable?
I am 6'2 225...if this has any relavence.
Thanks for your time.

Get a fully decked out 250R bored to a 330 with +3 a-arms, +4 axle, 18" tamers on Douglas Billet Beadlocks... Oh sorry, I was thinkin about a quad for me Seriously though, I would go with a 250R, 400ex, and my Cannondale has been doing great. My wheel got bent and I can't afford a new one yet so I haven't ridden it a lot but I hear that the more you ride the Cannondale, the better it gets.

I have an 86 250R & love it! Lots of power handles great lots of bolt on hop up parts. But I am always working on it. mostly constant tinkering but last year I broke a piston skirt which broke a piece off the cyl that got under the crank & put a hole in the case. that one cost me about $1000 to fix. Right now it is all apart again because I broke all 3 dogs off 3/4 gear even thou I put all new shift forks & a new shift drum in when I had it apart last year another $500. But what can you expect from a 16 year old quad that is raced & played on hard. The 400EX is also a sweet quad it's basicly a 250R frame with a four stroke motor still handles great (probably the best handleing quad made) But can be expensive to get large power gains. My choice was a 02 Raptor. I'm 6'2" 280 lbs & it hauls my big a$$ around great. It's easy to bolt on 12+ hp with just a pipe & airbox mods. While it doesn't handle as well as my 250R it is a better all around quad. it handles well enough & has so much low end torque that it is much faster in the tight stuff than the250R. It also has enough power to haul in the dunes. It worked out to be the right chioce for me.

CRAZYHORSE03: Perhaps I should of said it' easier to ride fast in the tight stuff if you are not constantly shifting or having to fan the clutch. I'm 42 now & when I'm not racing I like to enjoy the ride without having to worry about keeping it on the pipe. And while the 250R is going to be sold after I get it back together in case you think I was putting down "the master" I'm selling it back to my buddy that I got it from (it was a condition of the sale) I told him if he ever sells it again he has to sell it back to me so it's not going far for long. As I stated the Raptor was the right choice for me. If you would like to come down with your 250R & run the woods with us for a few hours in a Oklahoma summer (100 degrees 75%+ humidity) I can revive you afterwards since i'm a Firefighter/First responder! Glad you enjoy your250R I shure like mine but I love playing/racing on my Raptor!
