I have a 1998 Recon but I am only 5'5 I depends on how big you are the Recon is not really desined for riders too much taller than me.
I have got mine up to 50mph and with some mods you can make it go even faster. I think that this is an awsome quad for anyone who can fit on it.
Hope you still check it out, and you have to ride one for sure.

Get the recon! You will be able to keep up with if not pass any other utility machine out there. It has plenty of power and don't worry about it being too small. I am 6'3" and it feels great to me. Because it is smaller it fits into a lot of spaces(between trees) other four-wheelers have trouble getting into. Plus the lighter weight sure is a plus when it comes to loading on a trailer or pulling it over a log. Great machine.

We looked at the Bear Tracker, Bayou 220 & the Recon. The Recon is better built & real fun to drive. It handles great, plenty of power. You will be able to keep up with the bigger utilities on the trails.
I learned how to do small wheelies on it this past weekend.

Hey Seth... go for the recon! I tried all the
other bikes and the recon was the best of all.
I am having a blast on it... I used to own a Polaris Trail Blazer, and my Recon is much more
comfy and better steering. For the trails, and keeping up with everyone else... no problems.

Go with the Recon, GREAT little quad, with lots of power! I've had one for a year now, it's a 1997, and it's bullet proof! I just handed it down to the wife today, because I picked up my 00 Rancher ES 4x2. The Rancher is a fantastic machine, but you'll still catch me sneaking off on the Recon every now and then guaranteed! You can't beat the Recons agility!!! Jeff 00 Rancher ES 4x2, 97 Recon, 97 Lakota

What did you pay for your Rancher? I'm looking for the 4x2 ES and have been told that they are in very short supply therefore no price breaks.

Greetings,
There's no doubt that you can be very happy with a Recon -- its a snappy machine. When we got a Recon we also looked at the Polaris Trail Blazer and Trail Boss. You might want to look at the Trail Blazer -- for about the same money, the Trail Blazer is more sporty looking and it is a two stroke (which many people find quicker).
Actually, we liked both the Boss (considerably less powerful) and the Blazer but were influenced by the reliability thing -- which you can take with as many grains of salt as you wish.
Another avenue to consider is the lower end sport machines, the Honda 300EX, the Blaster, or the Warrior. They lean more toward pure sport and have manual clutches, but for the money, may make you happier in the long run.
Dirt Wheels does a nice job of laying out the models in their Buyers Guide issue -- they even order the spec sheets by price within each category. Also, check out the Manufacturers pages at this site. You can print out the specs on a few candidates and compare them side by side. But of course, try to go out and sit on as many as possible.
Having said all that, you'll probably love riding the Recon.
