I'm gonna buy a new atv this summer...
I'm not sure which one I want but my choices are the 2000 grizzly,kodiak 4wd or big bear 4wd. I like the 2/4wd option on the grizz and kodiak.I'm 6 feet tall, 200 lbs. I ride all kind of terrain. Mud hole, rocky terrain, deep water, dry terrain. I'm going to use it for hunting moose and dear. I'm also gonna use it for hauling a trailer, logs, and other work around the cotage. I'm just not sure if a really need a 600cc machine, but I want 400 and more. I'm not rich but I have the monney to buy the grizz if it worth it. I want the best for my cash. Low end and torque is more important than high end power...

Well, you say you want low end torque. The Grizzly will have a lot more than the Kodiak, maybe 28ft-lbs compared to 22ft-lbs. This is a big difference, but in all reality, the kodaik will pull anything within reason as will most utility quads. The other difference is the top end of the two. The Griz will be quite a bit faster than the Kodiak, though the new Kodiak will probably be pretty good. You say that top end doesn't matter, then I'd go with the Kodiak. Its liquid cooled, unlike the Griz which, although it is bearable, it gets very hot. The Kodiak now has the 2wd option, a good suspension, and the same auto tranny with engine braking. The throwback is mainly the grizzly's speed. That would be the only reason that I would choose a Griz over a 2000 Kodiak.(the Kodiak isn't a slug, its just that the Gizzly is extremely fast for a utility quad)

I agree with andy but if your going to do any dice runs or major trails the grizzly is mor comfortable and the speed is nice to have and so is the pulling power i pulled many a tree for loging with the grizzly

The grizzly is faster, but it will use up your gas quite a bit faster. If you are going on long hunting trips this is consideration. The 2000 kodiac is very nice looking. It is totally redesigned. It will pull or haul anything you would expect a good utility quad to. It is cheaper, better handling in the tight woods, and lighter. I think for utility use 600cc is a bit too much. Buy the Kodiac and save some money.
This is not a slam on the grizzly, which is one fine machine.

(I do not own a Kodiac so I have no bias towards it. I actually own a scrambler 500 HO.)

 

Unless you're gonna be signing for bankruptcy in a couple years, you'll be much happier with no regrets with the Grizzly. By saying "I don't need that much but its still good" means that you'll regret for taking the one that wasn't as good. The Grizzly is just a better quad, and if you can afford it TAKE IT.

I think you should buy a 00' kodiak. It has a great 2wd 4wd option like the grizz and the Ultramatic automatic transmission. It has great all around power like the grizz in a smaller package. If you dont think you need 600cc you should go with the kodiak. Its basicially the same thing in a cheaper smaller package.

I've looked at them both lately. I think you get more for the money with the grizzly. It was only $500 more then the kodiak. $6000 compared to $6500 retail.......

 

Right now you can buy a 99 Grizz and 2000 Kodiak for the same price! I have a 2000 Kodiak and have a couple of weekends in the saddle. The Kodiak is liquid cooled and double wishbone front suspension and tighter
turning and lighter. The Grizz is slightly faster and does have noticably more torque. The Grizz is air cooled, heavier, wider, longer and bigger engine 600cc.
The trade off is do you want lighter, smaller, better handling and cooler running engine or do you want the longer wheelbase, Higher seat, wider wheel base, torque and higher top speed. After several years of racing three wheelers I came to realize the guy with the biggest motor doesn't always cross the finish line first. Bigger motor means bigger mistakes on the track. The Grizz is a great machine and so is the Kodiak the Marketing people at Yamaha along with the engineers put the consumer in a tough position to damn many options. Good luck with your decision.

I recently purchased a 99 Grizzly and love it. There are some good pionts about a lighter quad. It definately takes more out of you banging around on a 600lbs machine all day. The bottom line is the Grizzly is the king of beasts and every time you pull up to one on your Kodiack your going to say to yourself, I could have gotteen one of those. Go for the Muscle!!!
