Why are dirt bikes more expensive than quads?
While we were shopping for our 1st quad, we noticed that supposedly equivalent dirt bikes seem to actually cost more than a quad.
Common sense tells me that a quad should cost more, right? They are twice the size so there is more parts, more metal, four wheels instead of two. Bigger should cost more, right? Not what we found. Example:
Our 1st quad that we just purchased was a Suzuki Ozark MSRP about $3500
246cc 4 stroke
Air cooled
Simple basic design
Has headlight and taillight (this was important to us)
We compared the Ozark to Honda's CRF230 dirtbike also at $3500
223cc 4 stroke
Air cooled
Simple basic design
BUT no headlight. If you want a headlight, you have to spend $4700 on an XR250
So lights appear to be an expensive thing to add to a machine but they come standard on most quads. Too bad they are harder to find on a dirt bike at the same price.
It appears to be true of other direct comparisons as well. If you compare a dirt bike in the 400 class to a 400 class quad, the dirt bike is slightly more expensive or at the very least you get less features for the same price when you buy a dirt bike. Anyone know why?
Thanks
Dave

You have to do a comparison of bikes with the SAME ENGINE, to be fair. Like, the Honda 400EX vs. the XR400R (same price). The Suzuki LT-Z400 vs the DR-Z400 dirt bike (dirt bike is cheaper). CRF450 vs TRX450 (dirt bike is a little more). Etc.............
Quads outsell everything else COMBINED (dirt bikes, MX bikes, road bikes, etc.), so it is pretty clear that quad riders are subsidizing dirt bike R&D, big time!
