I think there is a misconception about a machine that has been raced. In order to compete, racers need to have their machines running perfectly. This means that all the basic maintnence tasks are performed so they finish a moto: clean air filter, lubed chain, fresh oil, new top-end, etc. They can't have a chain snapping or top-end seizing in the middle of a race. Compared to a trail quad, yes, the machine will have taken more abuse, but at least it will have been properly maintained.

Here's what I looked for on mine:
1. Cracked case around countershaft sprocket from throwing a chain; can range from needing to be welded to needing to be replaced.
2. Stress cracks in frame; primarily on front engine mounts and right behind footpegs.
3. Rear axle bearing carrier; check to make sure the bearings aren't shot.
4. Overall appearance and running; should fire up in a couple kicks, look decent, sound good.
