Default Entry-level Sport Quad Purchase?

I would appreciate some advice as to what may be a suitable ATV for me. Here are the details:

I'm 37 years old
I race snocross in the winter
I would like to try ATV racing next summer
I have property to ride on right out my back door
I'd like to spend around $4000
Suzuki and Yamaha are preferred as I can get a deal

I guess I'm looking for a quad that I can trail ride around and race for fun without modifications. I'm obviously not going to be launching 50' in the air as I have to work on Monday!
My biggest question is whether to get a 250-300 or 350-400 range motor.

Thanks in advance for helping out us newbies!

Those 6-packs work pretty good.

For $4k you could get a nice slightly used Z/KFX 400.

entry level is z400?

Check out the Raptor 350 and i think the z250 might be to small for you.

or maybe a blaster, it all depends on what you feel comfortable on.

Says he wants to try racing. Even so, at 37 a 400cc is entry level imo.

i suppose it could be entry level considering he is mature enough to respect its power unlike alot of people i know, the z400 with reverse etc. makes it a good trail bike and you dont need heavy mods to race it, just the usual nerf bars etc. i would recomend if you start racing.

Z400 is my vote. It's tame enough for an adult beginner, yet has enough performance to keep an experienced rider interested. The stock machine is a little lame on low end power. Venting the airbox lid, and an aftermarket muffler, will really wake up the power, when you are ready.

As everyone is saying, The Z400 by Suzuki is by far the best trail bike, and also could be used for racing. You could also modify this thing really good, and is also reliable. You'll probaly have to get a used 2003 for that price. I personally think if you go any lower than a 400, you will eventually grow out of it a get bored. So the Z is the quad for you my man!

And if you don't like the looks you could try Kawasaki's 400 and Artic's Cat DVX 400. It's the same motor as the Z400 just different colors for the kawasaki and different fenders for the DVX.
