1bad250r is correct. They are reliable if you get all the bugs out but there are alot of bugs and the bugs are expensive. If your not a mechanic stay away from the r and get the z but if your good with the wrench and have extra money get the R. the R is definetly faster and more fun.
Some of the bugs are.
Clutch basket and plates: replace with Hinson
Carb: replace with pwj 36 or 38 depending on bore and porting.
Check compression: 170 or more or get ready for a rebuild.
Get your jetting right for every ride doing plug chops.
Rear end bushings will need to be changed for urethane and maybe axle.
Keep your air filter real clean.
Check your coolant frequently,
change your oil every 8 hrs. dont over or under fill.
Your premix must be accurate everytime or screw up jetting
put a fuel filter on it
check the frames for cracks by the foot pegs. Real common there.
check the engine for welds.
Probably depending on compression: over 180 use race gas only or under 180 high octane gas mix.
Plus the basic of break pads and clutch cables if not upkeeped before.
thats about it for the 250r that i can think of.

Now the Z
Put gas in it and change the oil every 10 hours.
check for frame cracks on early models.
have fun.

Another thing to consider and I'm sure you have -- the R is almost 20 years old. Unless you're buying from the original owner, the previously maintainence and history of the bike are a mystery. It could have been used for racing and had the sh*t beat out of it. Then again it may also be in perfect shape. There's really no way to know.

On the other hand, i fyou get a Z, you know exactly what you are getting. You'd probably buy a used one from the original owner. And if you get a new one then there's no problem there either.

Congratulations! You will love the 250R as far as riding. There isnt many bikes as fun or fast as that one. There is a reason it dominated the races for ten years. Good luck. By the way if you have any questions go to exriders.com. The people there no about everything.

Good choice! Just be ready for your riding style to change.....I used to be an "aggressive rider", but when I bought my R the only speed I know now is WFO! The 250R seems to bring the "bat out of hell" rider out of whoever has one!
