I think you are more likely to wreck on a bike, but less likely to get a severe injury because bikes weigh less and don't roll like atvs. I'd probably agree with you mwq.

I would put him on a dirt bike and cover him with all the protective gear you can. This will probubly start a fire storm in here but Im convinced that dirt bikes are much safer than quads. Its the perception of safety that gets most into trouble on a quad. A dirt bike appears dangerous, while the quad appears safe. People will try things on a quad that they wouldnt even think of trying on a dirt bike.

I will check on those models, thanks Yes my 10 yr old is a lot like me, HAS A NEED FOR SPEED. He would LOVE a dirtbike over an ATV Im just not sure we can convince his mom that he wont kill himself...again, a lot like me ahahaha and that scares me on the dirtbike ahaha that is definitely his preference though. thanks again for the advice on the other models

One of your questions concerned how kids get hurt on ATV's. Besides the rollover problem, the other problem is running into things. When kids panic in a dangerous situation, they grip the handle tighter and squeeze the throttle. They then run into trees and other immovable objects at full speed. This collision will throw them over the handle bars and into the object. Head injuries and broken necks are the result.
Where I live there have been at least three college age kids die from running into trees and breaking their necks. In all three cases it was determined they were driving as fast as the ATV could go when they lost control.

Sorry, mwq. I had two different thoughts going at the same time in the same post. As I can see I got the thread off topic. I should have only commented about young kids.
College age deaths were not from panic but from high speed riding w/o helmits in unrelated incidents over a three year period. News reports were all basically the same. High speed, no safety gear, one was drag racing a buddy, another lost control on a gravel road.

Thank you to everyone who has commented on my dilema...........the decision has been made and the jury has deliberated.................. I bought a small 90cc dirtbike which should light up some eyes come Christmas morning, and going to see if Uncle Sam will buy us a quad come April with income tax check, that way they can have the best of both worlds. thanks again......happy trails

Having had both I can say you wreck more often on a bike, but when you finally do on a quad it is much more serious.
When riding a dirt bike I would wipe out at about once per ride. I would get up, dust myself off and continue on. I have only had one wreck on a quad and almost died. Get my point?
