ATV recomendations of first timer
#1
Hey, I have not ridden anything besides my friends little Honda 80 (or something) when I was like 14 or 15. I am now 19 and am now going to finally purchase something I have wanted a long time! I will have $4,000 by the end of April, and can make more in the next few months.(hope to buy soon) Sorry for the long intro. My question is which ATV should I buy??? I have done a lot of reading on the forums, and still have no clue what to buy. I was looking seriously at the TRX250ex but a lot of people say I will "out grow it soon". I have NEVER driven anything with a clutch or a standard transmission. If I was to buy a TRX300ex or 400ex would it be a lot of work for me to learn how to use the clutch? I weigh 180 and am around 6 foot. This atv would be for fun only. I would not take it through anything too tough at first (but would like to in a year of so) The land where I live is pretty flat. I would also like an ATV with LOW MAINTENANCE! What do you guys recommend for me? Thanks!

Either the 300 or 400ex would be great choices for you. Learning to use a clutch is no big deal. Practice your starts on flatland for an hour or two and you should be able to nail it down pretty well. I also think the 250 would be a mistake for you. They are great quads, very reliable, but down on power. If you are looking at spending $4000.00, you are going to have a lot of choices.

Looks like youve already decided to go the sport route. I agree, the 250 cc machines will be short on power and once you get more seat time, youll want more.
Everyone had to learn the clutch at some point, you will too, its not a big deal. It helps if you can get someone with experience, on either motorcycles or quads to teach you the basics.
You should be able to find a lot of choices for under 4k, if youre looking at used. The suzuki z400 would be another good choice.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will have 4,000 by the end of this month, but can make a few thousand more if i need to in the following few months. I would like to go with something new (so I do not get someones garbage). And something that will last me quite a while. So I just want to make sure I make the right choice. As far as choosing to go with a sport bike, I just figured that would be my best bet as I do not have any need for a utility vehicle. What do you guys think? Thanks for all your help.
