Depends on if you want to wonder if every hill you point the front of your quad at "Am i going to make it" or just know your makin it, depends if you like draggin your quad outta the ruts or just makin it or if you wanna go fast or if your just content with getting there.
for trails i really like the Utes. you can carry supplies on the quad vs on your back. but for just rippin around i like my sporties. You kinda gotta have one of each at least other wise you will always want the other then you have one for each of your moods. you could get to mid class quads. like 500cc or less. one a 4x4 and one a sporty. and then you have one of each. or you could get one of the sorta sport ute types. like scrambler or wolverine or you could go all out and get a renegade. but thats huge cash.

Here in the arid southwest, a utility is a way lame ride in the open desert. On the other hand, a sport quad isn't the hot ticket in the mountains where it is rocky, there are big stream crossings, and it snows. My solution is to have both sport quads and utes, but my taste in utes is definitely for the smaller, lighter machines.
You are going to have to go out to the trails where you plan to ride and see if you will actually need 4wd, high ground clearance, racks to carry stuff, or big fenders for mud protection. I say absolutely get a sport quad if it will handle your trails....you will just have so much more fun! But if you must have a 4wd, I just got a new Honda Rancher 420 and it is the closest thing to an all-around 4wd machine that I have ever ridden.
