when i hit the electric start button the starter motor turns over but the engine isnt cranking or rolling over, is my starter screwed or is it the internal set of starter gears i havent taken the starter off yet, i just want opinions before i tackle this one ,thanks

 

Pull out one spark plug.
Put into 2nd gear
Pull in clutch and have someone push you down the driveway, pop the clutch.

Sometimes debris gets caught in the sprag clutch and the starter cannot engage.

If this does not work, have someone help you pull start the motor.
Once started, let run till motor is hot.

Turn off motor and try to restart. If starts, must of had debris in sprag clutch.
Change oil/filter.

If motor will not start after being pull starter, then if appears the sprag clutch may have deformed a roller. Get a manual and replace the sprag clutch.

with the starter off i can see the sproket gear ...should i be able to turn the gear forwards and backwards with my finger...if the roller is deformed does it allow u to do this...i have a parts motor from a 2000 model(mine is 04'X) how can i tell if that sprag clutch is any good?i bought a manual online from repairpro and its not a very good one...thanks

 

oh yeah,i did the popping the clutchin 2nd gear trick,cleaned all terminals too...it did catch only once and then did the same thing... starter just whinning over no engine cranking

 

replace the sprag clutch.

 

ok, i just removed the sprag from my 2000 parts motor and am ging to replace it,sprag appears to be in good shape,hope it works i'll let u know how i make out

 

well..I have to thank you guys ,sprag was shot to hell,i know what your saying when there might be debris in the sprag, there was all kinds of metal shavings(almost too much for liking)i think i might do another oil change i didnt like all the shavings and hopefully this wont happen again for a while, thanks
