Does head porting lose any where?

I am planing my next upgrade. Head porting. I am considering sending it to a guy in K.Y. (wonder who ) But I wanted to know do you lose HP anywere? With opening up the ports you would think you loose air velocity? meaning less lowend and more top end?? I might be way off and probably am but just want to know..

Yeah, it does. I remember a article in Dirt Wheels on the Ron Wood stage 1, 2, and 3 kit. Stages 1 and 2 really improved bottom end, stage 3 DESTROYED power at lower rpms.
But they RIP on the top, got to see one at LS this year. A teenaged girl was riding it and holding her own with the Banshees. She didn't even waste her time with other 4 strokes.
I wish i could find that old magazine, been looking for it for 2 weeks, its like from April '01.

tony didn't you have a thread about valves and cams in the last thread about this subject like a week ago. hey might be able to help with the a-1 cams if you want to try a swap at sand mt. i'll have a compressor if we can find a clean enough place to work on the top end.

What would we need the commpressor for exactly? We could do a swap out in my trailer if you wanted. But I am not sure if I wnat to go to those lengths ou there. I would kind of like to just kick back and relax and have fun. It is bad enough I have to tear it down tommorow and put it back together next week. Anyway good idea though.

i was thinking to blow all the sand and dirt off the machines, there the cams in mrs sandmans machine so it would have to be in the evenings she is kind of moody about her quad being down, unless she wrecks then she is kind of friendly( with me ) guess it makes it easier to get the repair money

for the typical port job off just cleaning up casting flash, rough edges, and matching the intake to the head ports you'll lose nothing and gain from mid up. its the actual enlarging of the ports that cost the bottom.
about the cam swap, RW cams stick to no tight tolerance on the base circle, they vary, and my base circles on my RW cams are .010" larger than the stockers. this means difference shims required, .005" thinner of course. just keep it in mind, have all the shim stock you got laying around the garage with you when you swap.
