Default Another darn JETTING question....

do not use the hex jet - its not for this carb.
only use SMALL ROUND MIKUNI, or DYNOJET.

If the jet in question has a groove around the perimeter of the round head its a mikuni, if it has no groove and is just smooth its a dynojet.
Only use dynojet mains with dynojet needle, and only mikuni mains with mikuni needle.

Stock needle position is 4th groove from top - you being on the 2nd groove, after adding air flow, is a step in the wrong direction. if its stock needle, 4th or 5th groove needed, if its dynojet needle then 3rd groove. in my experience needle position is main cause of stumbles coming outa corners or hammering at the base of a hill.

I'll tell ya now...
I'm going to swap them to new plugs.
I again just started the bomb. Starts first <push> of da button.

However....
Idle is okay.
Just above 1/8th throttle it wants to die. If I stab the throttle (to WOT).... it'll have a huge hesitation.... then come to life. But the midstream is horrible. Worse than before.

So far, I've got;

- 45 pilot
- 2 1/2 turns out
- cut spring (5 coils)
- 2 drilled slide holes to 1/8th
- 185 (mystery main) jet
- 3rd position on a stock needle

I know 1/8th to 1/4 is the pilot... but I went fatter, from a 40 to a 45 (richer).
.... and with a moved needle to the 3rd spot from the second (also richer)

But I've still got a "stumble"....

confused!!!!

I just saw your post Hightower....
I'll try and move the needle down even further.... it seems that could be an issue.
I'll also check the jet to see if it's got the groove.... but it is round and flat on top.

I also just called Ron Woods Racing
They say unless it was a "jet kit" it would have been a Mikuni jet they sent me....
So for all practical purposes... I'm going to assume it's a 185 Mikuni jet. (there I go assuming again!!!)

you opened up your air box, and put on the highest flowing pipe made, but the needle is set leaner than the stock position. if raising the clip (lowering the needle) fromt he stock posotion is better than the original 4th groove, it could be because too rich a main.

The needle is only leaner... cuz it was set on the second notch, I moved it to the third. Now Richer.
I'll move it to the 4th or 5th.... and see what happens! It just could be.

Default Another darn JETTING question....

J.a. I'm sorry about the hex jet thing . it was late last nite I meant round . the hex was on my sled jets. Look on buttfungus's web site and he has the comparison chart for the mikuni vs. dyno jet sizes. I had a similar setup and was running a dyno jet 195 but it was too rich . I would try a 190 dynojet , or the mikuni comparible size. I now run with the lid on and mikuni jets and I cant tell a difference from the dynojet kit to mikuni . I'm at stock needle in center grove , 170 main with lid+tubes on. plugs look perfect.

Uhh ohh.....

I've got 6 grooves.

Now, with all this....
Is it a sure thing I'm running a Dyno needle???
And... more than likely a Dyno jet. As a 185, maybe kinda lean.

I'm gonna move the needle position drastically and see if it's too rich.
(Maybe I'll do that tomorrow... I'm too tired now.)

Don't know if we touched on this yet but the Dyno jet has to be used with the dyno needle and the Mikuni jetswith the Mikuni needle or you will have problems. I guess the Dyno needle is a little fatter.

Thanks Snake... It's been mentioned.

I'm gonna take a hard look at it tonight.... a real hard look.
It's gotta be a dyno jet. But from everything... it's more a Mikuni.
Ron Woods said if they sent me the "kit" then it'd be all Dyno. Hmmm.
And if they sent me just the jet, it'd be a Mikuni.

SO....
One more time.

The Dyno NEEDLE has 6 grooves right??????
with the stock one having 5?!

One more time...
Someone other than Mr. Tower know?? I'm sure he's right, but I'd like more opinion (or fact in this case).

Help...
