Default '04 X gearing

First, let me say thank you to all of you who helped with some of my questions before buying this thing. I've been on it for about three weeks and one thing I want to do is put on a one tooth bigger front sprocket. The reason is because it rips through the gears too quickly. I think a taller front will allow me to run a gear longer. The question is, will it top out in fifth then? Right now it takes forever to get to 7000 rpms in fifth down a dirt road. With a taller gear it might not rev out and maybe go slower. I've heard everyone gears up and goes faster but I was wondering if this is really the case. Also, will the chain adjust for this gear?

yes the chain will adjust for anything between 14T front to 17T front, assuming you leave the rear stock. if you put on a 17T the stock case saver will not fit without shaving a little off, or slotting the mounting holes a bit. so also buy a second case saver, so you can put the unaltered one back on if you switch back to 16T or smaller.

if you ride wide open all the time maybe the 17T is for you, but if you ride woods trails you prolly won't like it at all. I ride a stage 2 DS, and run 15/40 gearing because I can stay in 3rd gear more and not have to constantly battle back and forth between it and 2nd everytime I take a corner. and steep technical hills I used to take in 1st I can now take in 2nd, and rock crawling in 1st no longer has to have as much clutch feathering. but to each their own, try everything, choose what works for you.

I forgot about my woods ride. It was a little tall in first gear and required a little feathering. I like the gearing it has. Pleanty of top and o.k. woods. The only thing I don't like is it revs out of gears too fast. Almost like a peaky motor, I have to shift all the time. If it made more power below about 4000 it might be better. Like I said, I just got this thing and trying to tailor it for me. I'll try some stuff. Thanks.

well i currently run th 17t and i love it, i can hold up wheelies much better now, can walk 1-3 no prob, 4 is very difficult, usually hafta really get on it to keep it up, but usually don't have room to walk it that far, but i usually am in 1st or 2nd threw trails, sometimes 3rd hehe, i personally really like it, but now the highest i can get is about 6400 with 22" rear tires, with 16 i can hit about 7100 wit 22", i'm only loosin 3mph but i love they way it feels now, so now my mods will be towards makin the motor pull that all the way to rev limiter, i may order a new 16 and 15 and compare them,

also, are you still running a bone stock machine, if you are invest in a endcap, air filter and dynojet kit and you'll notice a big difference below 4000

Yes, it's bone stock. One huge reason I bought it, it don't REQUIRE thousands of aftermarket dollars to be fun. My dealer told me about the free end cap mod (no $300 exhaust for us ). I also have a White foam air filter. I only bought that because it looked like a UNI and I liked how easy they are to clean. I haven't tried it yet. I'm going to wait to try this stuff so I can feel a difference. As for the jet kit, I've read on here that I don't have to rejet. Maybe a go to a 170 I think I read somewhere.

The needle in the DynoJet kit is what's supposed to make the difference.
Your DS will be a whole new quad with an endcap, filter, and jet kit.

I run the 17 tooth front also and I must say that it is a different machine. I also installed the Ron woods heavy clutch springs and a K&N (stock jetting). I can now launch better due to less violent wheelies and pull Raptors much Easier and faster than before. I topped out at 81.9mph and STILL bumped the rev limiter on my X, in fifth!! The 17 front seems to waken the X to its true stock potential. I would highly recommend the 17 tooth. As for the low end bog I raised my Idle to 1450 rpms and it was eliminated. I still can pull wheelies when wanted well into third gear.
