How can you judge exactly how fast it will go... There are so many factors that can make a difference. Especially break in. 2 friends of mine both bought brand new 2002 R1's last year at the same time. They were both stock and had roughly the same miles at the time of testing.

The heaviest guy (by about 20 pounds) of the two hit 180 mph on Radar. The 2nd R1, with the lighter guy, moments later, only managed to get to 173 mph on the same radar...

Some bikes are naturally "gifted" more than others... Just like quads...

I don't judge -- i use GPS and i can tell you no R1 will go 180 "true" mph with out extensive motor work. They are slower than G1K's and marginally faster than 954's. Where was this supposed radar? Maxton? No magazine has ever gotten an R1 faster than 174 or a 954 faster than 172 or a G1K faster than 178... Guess you guys are just lucky...Right.. And ALL motorcycle speedos are 8-10% off -- they have been since i got my first bike in 1981.... Go to a real motorcycle site like www.suzukihayabusa.org and post that crap.. You'll get laughes off....

True, there are too many factors. More than likely your two friends had different shift points and body position(not to mention physical size) which is prolly the main reason for the two mph differences. Yes the bigger fella went faster. One usually has to move all the way pack in the seat and arch your back up for the least amount of drag. Sitting flat and right behind the shield is not the best for aerodynamics. I've tried both and saw a 2mph difference with me on my 00 Busa through the traps IN THE 1/4 MI. Same bike, same rider, same track, same day. Sitting back and arched alittle was consistantly faster. One can be off by 200rpm on your shift points and make a 1mph difference as well. I'm sure it would make more in a longer distance.
I've never seen a stk 954 hit 178(true). Guess its possible. Great handling bike and pretty quick for 954cc. Not known for top speed. Left them for dead on a Gixxer 1k(top end) which is'nt the best on top either. Most speedo's are 6-9% off on jap bikes. That makes 6-9mph AT 100 MPH.

I never said the radar was "TRUE"... Just to emphasize it was the SAME radar for BOTH bikes on the same day one after the other. And one of the biggest factors on top speed is wind. A bike against the wind will have a LARGE difference with a bike going down-wind... It's just not easily comparable as saying, my bike goes 172, yours does 168...

Barometric pressure, temperature, wind direction and resistance, elevation, rider weight, posture, gearing... They all come into play...

What's with the attitude?

Actually yes - wind is a factor BUT -- drag coeffecient is the single biggest factor and it is horrible compared to cars. Proven time and time again in wind tunnels... No attitude but since i have owned a Busa for well over a year and no exactly how these bikes run on top end as well as drag racing i feel i amentitled to call a BS flag when necessary... A 180mph R1 makes it very necessry and so does a 178mph 954. My buddies 954 "indicates" 178 on the speed on "the big road" as we call it down here. He was pegged at that indicated amount when i went by him like an R1 does an R6 -- guess what -- my bike is rpm (by ecu) limited to 186... No way he was going any faster than 170 - 173 at best...

Every weekend... But only to 186mph as my ECU limits the bike to this....Takes 26 seconds to reach that speed..
