CDI....worth it or not?

ya the chance it will fry ur stuff is probably pretty slim.... but there is always the possibility of problems with it...and if this procom company isnt around...no one will be there to fix it....

The legitimate Big Gun CDI is on eBay right now for about !55 or 165. However, this is the unit that only works on the newer DSs. I think if you wait for Big Gun to 'release' the CDI for the older models, you could probably do just as well.

I'm only commenting on this subject because the Predator owners are in the same boat. Pay 100 bucks or so for a Procomm on e-bay or pay 300 to 400 for a unit that does the same thing but has someone's "label" on it. Aftermarket companies are making big dollars from ATV crowd and most of them want to keep it that way.
I personally like the fact it still has a rev limiter, just ask bigshow or Zillarider02 what happens when you don't have one!
I emailed several e-bay buyers that purchased these units (both DS650 & Predator owners), everyone came back with positve comments. Seems as though you DS guys need to tell them the connector type you have so they can send out the right unit.
PS - if your worried about the CDI failing and trying to get it warranted or fixed its a risk you take with any electrical part from anyone.

The only thing your missing with your logic is the fact that the hardware came out of the same factory. The R&D of the power curve, however, was developed by Big Gun. Procom has the EPROM chip and the plastic housing, which they mold into various shapes. Therefore, consumers can save a buck or two on price and get the entire unit from Procom (again, this is the legal point of contention that Big Gun has with Procom). However, I ask you who will develop the next generation CDI? - who will be willing to develop different power curves for more quads? Procom won't because they didn't develop those power curves - they dont even own one quad to test any of those CDIs. They relied on testers like me to confirm each power curve. It is true, we all try to support the dealers and vendors that help develop new products. Certainly, for quads that have very few parts available, we want new parts down the road. I can't see how this will help Predator or DS Owners down the road. However, it can help them in the short term by saving a buck or two.

I think truck racer is right, except in this case he isn't. Competition is good. However - this isn't competition. Big Gun paid for the research which is put into those CDI units. Then they contracted with Procomm, to build them to their specifications. This means that Big Gun shelled out lots of cash to get the R&D done, then gave those specs to ProComm. Now procomm is selling the units to Big Gun as they are supposed to however they are offloading hundreds on eBay for quite a bit less. This prevents Big Gun from selling enough units to recover their R&D costs, which is a really bad thing. This sort of situation if it were allowed to continue would cause companies to stop developing new products, and we do not want that sort of thing.

FYI - The lawyers on both sides are talking - If there is no agreement, life will be bad for Procom. There is already another manufacturer picked out by Big Gun, one of the largest most reputable companies in the CDI arena. So relaiable are the units, that they make CDI units for many ATV manufacturers. I'll know more in two days.

and i just bought the current big gun cdi ..... hopefully this one is as good as the next.....
so do you think big gun will keep is current power curve and have it manuf. with this "other" manuf.? or will they make a new power curve? (i hope they do somthing with procom, cuz that is seriously dumb if they just let them get off with no recourse for thier actions.....)
