Broken Shift Fork in the tranny
Im not sure but it apears that when the shift for broke it cause the gear that it raises or lowers to do just the oposite of what it was doing right before it broke. That cause the gears to bind and as the pic shows the weaker of the two lost the battle. The gear accross from that one has a couple scraps but nothing bad.
Im just poor old trailer trash so thats part of the reason for me doing what I can myself. I'll have hope that luck is on my side this time. Undercutting would be great but out of my reach this go around.

Does it need a crank? If it does I would just look for a good used engine that is ready to drop in, or look for a bike in better shape.
Also do a search on a guy named Hightower on here, he has a whole library on how to take these apart. It's really easy once you have done it. If you are mechanically inclined it makes it a bit easier.

I put this site together a few years back. It might help if you need to get into the tranny. http://www.ljsoftware.com/DS/DS650Main.html
There is also a helpful links section, that has a link to the bmw f650 site. You will find most anything you need to know about the DS motor there.
