My wifes suzuki xl7 was leaking oil so i took it to the dealer and waited for a answer.
They called at 530 to tell me that 3 timeing chain tensioner have broke. It will cost 1200
to fix. MY ? for any mechanics is .What are they and is that a good price. It is on a 6 cyl.

I dont know what motor is in the SUV, but I dont see how a broken Timing chain tensionor(s) can cause OIL to be leaking. Was it a bad leak?? If they are infact telling the truth(wich I would want to see for my own eyes) Then 1200 is a decent price. Usually you will have to dig pretty far in to the motor to get into the timing chain area. I have my doubts though.

Bigger the oil was leaking from the front of the engine and it was making a slight ticking.
The engine is a 2.7 liter v6 efi dohc. The leak looked worse than i think it was. There was no puddle
under the car. This could deffintly hamper time off for riding.

A timing chain tensioner does just that....keeps a proper amount of tesnion on the timing chain to avoid slop-breakage- and proper timing of the engine.
That being said...did the engine run rough-hesitate-surge-use excessive fuel-hard to start?
I would ask how they determined that 3 (a very specific number) tensioners have broke without removing the timing cover.
Verify that is indeed has a chain and not a belt ! ! Someone correct me if I`m wrong, but timing belts don`t have tensioners do they? Thats why its much more important to replace a timing belt than a timing chain because as the belt wears/stretches there isn`t anything to maintain proper tension.
What year is the vehicle? Miles?
Doesn`t Chevy make that engine for Zuki?
Front wheel drive or Rear?
Look and see if there is a plastic cover (probably facing the pass side fender if FWD) and just how many accessories need to be removed to gain access to the cover. Remember....if it is FWD, you can gain alot of room by removing the wheel and inner fender well plastic.
Honestly...1200 sounds steep...but I would have to look at one to give a better opinion......and I too have serious doubts about it BREAKING 3 timing chain/belt tensioners. But you never know.

Most Japanese vehicles have timing belts and they do have tensioners and some not all use the hydraulic action of oil pressure to run. However i would check this out on a suv forum there are some out there. the price you have been quoted sounds a little over the top
I changed the belt on my toyota 4 runner including removing and refitting the tensioner in 1.5 hrs
Here is a link to the toyota forum i use you might be able to get a link to a susuki site rom some of the guys there

Forcefed there was no problem starting ran great ,fuel mileage never changed. How do i go about
finding out if it is a chain or belt? The year is 2002. The miles 41000. It is four wheel drive. I will
ask tomorrow how they found out the tensioners were broke. Thanks for the help, I dont know what
the right ? are and your input helps tremendously. The last ?s you asked are they to determine
how long the job will take?

i can check my mitchel tommorow and possibly get you a diagram. did you drive your vehicle in to the dealer? if you lost a timming chain tension the motor would not run. the other questin is if it did lose the tensioner did the cams jump time from the crank. if so 95 percent of dual overhead cam motrs are interference motors and will smack valves if the timming chain jumps. i can beleive the timming cover may be leaking oil. not an uncommon problem. but for them to tell you that there is a broken tensioner, they must have taken it apart. also i have never seen a motor with more than one timming belt or chain tensioner. they may have multiple guides but not tensioners.

somthing does not sound right with what they are telling you? how many miles are on the vehicle? if it is not under warranty i would suggest calling aaa and finding a aaa certified repair facility near you with ase certified mechanics. chances are they will give you a clear answer and be cheaper than the dealer. there are alot of things on the front of a motor that can leak oil, valve covers, crank seal, oil pan gasket, timming cover if it is a chain, even oil cooler lines.
