Default heat sensor question.

i was riding the other day and noticed my fan wasnt coming on when my engine was getting hot....im guessing i broke the senser when i took it of to ship my engine off.My question is does that sensor ( the one facing the rear wheel.not the small one facing straight up) control my overheating light or is it the small sensor.the reason im asking is if i pull the wires out of the big sensor and hook them up to a toggle switch will my light still go off when it gets hot???.....................i ran a wire accross them and my fan still works..
