A-Arms and Shocks
I was wondering a few things about the shock and a-arm combos out there. I want to sometime in the future here upgrade my stock suspension. However at the moment and most likely at any point in the near future will I be able to afford the A-arms and shocks all at once. The smart thing to do would be to save up, but we know thats hard to do. So what I want to know is, can i buy say the elka quadrates, and use them on my stock a-arms for now? or any other aftermarket shock.....and having brought that up, with the shocks that I can use on the stock A-Arms, can I also use them same shocks on extended A-Arms? If i can run these parts one at a time, which would be smarter to do? run aftermarket A-arms first then shocks, or visa versa?
BTW My friends and I do all kinds of riding, from trails, to mild sand, to fields, and some track, and a lot of outthere jumps. So which do u think would suit me more? width for stability or shocks? Thanks for your help, and I hope it all made sence. Bacically I just want to know if i can interchance shocks and A-arms so i don't go out and buy one and have it not compatable with the next in the future.

Most people agree that a DS doesn't need to be wider. The biggest improvement in handling will be the shocks. If you order quad rate elka's they come with zero pre-load and will drop the quad a couple inches. This will help a lot in the handling department. Also, most serious riders will out ride the stock suspension on the older DS's quite easily. From what I've heard, that is much harder to do with the new X's. I would buy the shocks first, and if it takes you a year to save up for the a-arms, it will be time to rebuild the shocks anyway, and you can have them re-valved for extended a-arms at that time. The only thing you will ever need to do to the rear shock is have it re-valved as it is a very good shock to begin with.

I agree with BajaIowa, the DS doesn't need to be any wider. But if you did buy those Elkas now and then get wider a-arms later the Elkas or any shock for that matter would still bolt right up. The only thing is that the shocks would have to be revalved to accomidate for the extra leverage from the wider front end.

give TCS a call, better product cheaper price.. they will custom build them to your needs.. takes about 3-5weeks... order from ELKA and they be at your door 6days later...they come right off the shelf...they'll hand you a set for your body weight range.. but thats not the only thing that needs to come into the equation.. i had TCS on my DS and they were incrediable.. i will be ordering another set for my 450 once i get the money for arms and shocks.. for the ds you dont need wider.. i just got a top upper arm for adjustments.. my 450 definatly needs wider so ill save and buy arms and shocks at the same time

That pretty much sums it up then. Right now, my control feels like crap, it's tippy, and bucks around in high speed whoops. So last night I found a page that sums it up how to dial in your suspension. So that is my project today. See if I can get it to ride any better, which from the sounds of it won't be all that hard. Thanks for the help guys, muchly appreciated.
