The stock setting for the air / fuel mixture screw is 2.5 turns out from closed. Most people will run it at 2.5 or 3.0 turns out. I've never heard of anyone running it more opened up or closed than that. So you at 2.5 should be fine. Since changing the needle is free, why not try richening the needle jet? Move the C clip lower onto the needle (Towards the pointed side) and place it in either the 3rd or 4th slot. You might also buy a couple of extra main jets, stock is 165 so I would be a 170, 175 and 180. This way you are covered if you need to re-jet later you wont need to make a second trip to the store.
Let me know how you do, I have a 2003 DS650 Baja as well, though I recently upgraded my carburetor.
What do your spark plugs look like? (What color?) The color of the plugs and the color of the suit that is coming out of your exhaust will tell you how your engine is running.
