Carb, I know this sounds crazy (or dumb)

I was messing with cutting the carb spring. It's the spring right under the cap right? So I got a spare & cut 4 coils off. So I'm in such a hurry I go for a ride & the quad runs great! I get back in the garage & there is my spring laying where I left it! I put it in & maybe it's in my head but it seemed a nick slower. Just what exactly does that spring do & why did my quad run as if I didn't even need it?

yes it will run w/ out it. But that spring is needed, that slide it opperates, it shuts off the gas when you chop the throttle. If that spring doesnt close all the way gas will be let back in the cylnder and cause backfiring. the 2000 models had a lighter spring and it happend to me ( the Backfiring) so I upgraded to a 2001 spring it was heaver and would close the throttle all the way.

i did the same thing when i had the stock carb, seems stock is better.

You think the stock spring is better than the cut spring? When comparing my stock to my cut one I might agree with you.
I'm not going to run without one. I was more afraid of a slightly open throttle on a downhill decent!
