I seem to have a new problem with the DS, when starting the starter sounds like it is full of gravel. I think it is in the starter clutch . I will tear into it soon and keep all informed.

 

Mine was making the same noise, I took it apart and the gear was shot. I took the side cover off and the double gear was also shot.
the starer cost me $311.00 the double gear was $106.00 and the gear that connects to the fly wheel was shot. $46.00. do you know if this is a common problem? e-mail me and let me know mpwallis@comcast.net I also have a 2001 black DS650
