Default Engine Noise

Hey guys i have a 2004 DS X and it makes allot of noise from the engine its sort of a rattle type like a loose bolt or something and i have checked over all bolts on the machine. Ive heard the ds has a noisy engine and makes more noise than other quads... anyone else having noises like this?? its around 5 thousand rpm and then it just stops and is nice and quiet after that and before that rpm

My 2001 DS has always had a super quiet, and tight engine. And all other DS's I have rode with. Are you sure the niose is in the engine? Can you putt it in Neutral hear this noise??

Is it a Clunking sound, or Rattling sound?

It must be your timing chain tensioner. Sometime they can get stuck, and the chain will be loose. You can take the big bolt out of the head, and pull it out and see if if it is stuck closed. If it is, you can replace it with a manual tensioner for Ron Woods.

good luck.

At 5000 RPM I doubt Cam Chain Tensioner. I haven't had the problem before but, have heard that is usually at lower RPM's

Check your exhaust nuts, heat shield, chain roller, all exhaust mounts, foot peg and heel guard mounts (most of the vibration on the DS engine is in the Footpegs - wierd - Raptor vibration is in the bars.)

Check your fan too.

These are most of the items I've seen come loose.

Also, check your spark plug wires. I've had them come loose and since you still have two the quad will run and you will have one just rattling around.

I have an 04 X and have a little engine noise at idle too. When I throttle a little, the noise goes away. Checked various items and never found anything to be loose. There's just a little engine noise coming from the motor. Can't hear it when sitting on the machine, must place head at engine level. I don't think it's a problem, my machine has run good since August 2003 with no problems.

I had it before and it was my chain roller. It had gotten worn out so I replaced it with a new one from Alba.

If my rmp drop below 1000 rmps at idle, I get a terrible pining sound coming from the engine, but as long as the rpms are above 1000 rpms there is no noise. When I first got it the idle was set around 900 rpms and the sound was very noticeable.
No other bad noise from the 650. Idle rpm should be set at 1300 +/- 100.

I had this problem, and it turned out to be a loose motor mount bolt....

Another very common source of noise are the springs on the exhaust pipe. Check those first since it is the easiest thing to check. Both of my DS650s had the spring noise until I removed the exhaust - upon reinstallation the springs must have been in different positions and no longer make any noise. Just stick some high temp rubber hose under it and see if it goes away. If the noise steps, pull the rubber out before you melt it and then pull the springs off, & put them on in different locations. You can also try and bend the spring tabs up just a little, which would make them not touch the exhaust pipe and thus not vibrate.

If you start trying things and nothing works, be sure to post here with the results and the gang can help you get it on the right track.
