Well we were at the sand yesterday and the 02 now makes a grinding noise its bad it still starts . I would like to fix it myself first do you need a side gasket before pulling off the side cover ? is this something the average guy can fix? Is there any dealer that stocks these parts were talking about?sandfest is just around the corner i got 8 days to get it fixed i pulled off the pipe and got it ready dropped the oil but i would feel better if i at least had the side gasket before i take it apart any helpfull tip would be appreciated i have all the tools but the puller

I dont know were to get the parts fast but dont ride it any more untell you get it fixed. I rode my DS most of the day after it started grinding and I think that is what took out the flywheel. Big$$$$$$$$. I had to replace everything on that side of the motor except the stater and I had to bye that becouse it comes with the flywheel....

well mine has grinded for a LONG time... (probably 40+ hours) and my list of parts needed are
Sprag bearing
61 tooth starter gear
a lock washer
and the gasket...
if you are careful when you take the cover off you might be able to save the gasket (i accidentally ripped mine...) sounds like you have done half the battle (exhaust parts) so i would go ahead and do it...
you will probably need a fly wheel puller to get the flywheel off though (they get pretty stubborn)
but besides that everything else seems pretty easy.
