anyone know where to set cam timing on a z 400?
I've got a buddies z 400 in the garage for a valve service and cam chain replacement, I would love some help getting the cams back in, in the right place. There is a 1,2,3, on the cam gear, what should be up at TDC, I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.

Ok, there is a little plug on the clutch side of the motor it is on top. It is like a number 7 allen wrench, take the plug out and rotate the motor over until you get a mark, looks like a line. The camshaft sprocket has an arrow marked "1". Turn the exhast camshaft so that the arrow is alinged with the gasket surface of the cylinder head. Engage the cam chain with the exhaust camshaft sprocket. The other arrow marked "2" should now be pointing straight up. Starting from the roller pin that is directly above the arrow marked "2", count out 15 roller pins (from the exhast camshaft side going towards the intake camshaft side. engage the 15th roller pin on the cam chain with the arrow marked "3" on the intake sprocket. The number "3" will be point straight up on the intake cam. The number "2" with be pointing straight up on the exhaust cam. This puts the cam lobes on both cams facing opposite ( lobes will be facing away from each other).
I hope that helped you and didnt confuse you. Need anything else with it let me know.
Good luck the drz motor is easy to work with.
