Default NEW DS BREAK IN

Ok here it is. I found a dealer in my area and pick up my new DS this friday. I was wondering what you guys think about the new break in procedure that has been buzzing around? I have two new four strokes to break in, and have only owned two strokes. I read about this new break in procedure that basically tells you to rip on the bike right out of the box compared to the usual easy manufacture method. Have any of you guys tryed to break there bikes in like this, and what was the outcome.

Thanks

Default NEW DS BREAK IN

this thread will get interesting I bet.......

What I was told when we broke ours in was to vary the throttle durring riding and occasionally pin it but get back off and to not let it sit and idle for extended periods. Do this for two tanks of fuel.

Thats what they told us 3 years ago.............

I was told to ride it easy for the first ten hours of riding, no more than half throttle.

Default NEW DS BREAK IN

When I bought my 01 ds I watched the dealer set it up,put a little gas in it to run it and check it over We rolled it into the pickup I brought it home filled it full of gas and the first ride was wide open to see what it would run on the radar. It topped out at 76mph.And 4000+ miles later it still runs like a top. I have tried both ways for break in and have noticed no difference either way.

bring the engine up to temp and ride it hard, with todays superior machineing processes and materials and tolerences the main thing you are "breaking in" is the cylinder and rings sealing. Rings need high pressure to create an optimum seating surface and riding it now like you will in the future ie. hard, is a good things and will ensure the best ring seal. IF you are not comfortable with the handling of the bike than don't push your luck. JMO

Default NEW DS BREAK IN

I always bring my bikes up to temperature 3 times while idleing and have an industrial fan infront of them then I take them out and never exceed half throttle for the first tank then on the second tank I go into the powerband slowly by the end of the second tank I go full throttle for a few seconds then back off and let the motor calm down a bit after two tanks it's off to the races. My motors have always run well and have not had any blow YET.

That motonews break secrets article is great, I'd highly recommend reading it then draw your own conclusions as to whether a hard or soft break in is best. I'd strongly suggest changing your oil after your first hour or so of riding, then again after about 4-5 more hours, you will notice metal shavings gathering on the magnet in the drain plug. Warming up the engine and changing the oil are two of the most important things in keeping your machine running a long time.
