Installing HP-Research mods this weekend
#21
My testing at Dumont showed the 15/40, 15/41 and 14/39 needed optimum jetting in order to not scrub RPM on the top of the steep hills.
14/40 pulled hard and fast on the really steep hills, and was more forgiving when the jetting was not spot on.
I run a 11:1 piston, trail cams, and Lectron, 22"s.

There are plenty that have run the stocker for years without issues. Just upgrade the springs. Seems like a lot of money to spend if the upgraded springs offer the same benefit.
What am I missing?

What gear are you going up the hills in with that gearing? For some reason I've only had good luck shooting the hill with third gear. If I gear the quad to go up in 4th I just don't have the speed I had in 3rd
I have found that on some of the real steep dunes I can only pull second though. I can wind the crap out of it in second but, not quite enough to pull it in third. These are the dunes that are as steep as they can get before the forces of nature cause the grains of sand to fall down so, most dunes I'm fine in 3rd.
Can you pull the drag hills in 4th and the steep ones in third? Hmmmmm

14/40, 3rd 7,500 rpm
I was real close to pulling fourth but I only tried on the center piece of sand between the left/right Comp hills at Dumont. Its pretty steep. And, with the 14/41, I still couldn't get fourth on the steep portions of Dumont Comp hill. But, I pulled 3rd at 7,500 rpm on the "forces of nature" sand hills. The front faces of Dumont on the camp ground side, at any spot, I can pull third at 7,500rpm. I really liked that.
Since I trail ride so much, I opted for the 14/40 gearing, plus it beat my friends 15/41 by over a bike length. Our bike mods are identical except for the gearing we were comparing.
I think my bike would need a 14/42 or 14/43 to "pull" fourth. Also, 14/39 lost the brutal punch on the trails and scrubbed R's in the steep stuff, so I switched back to the 14/40.
15/43 and 14/40 are mathatically dang near identical, except I maintain rear clearance when desert trail riding.
oh, I run 250lbs of rider + gear and beer.

From what I hear is with the barnett xtra disc you actually get a better hold, longer life and the clutch lever pull is close to stock. Less arm pump when dunin if ya know what I mean. Cost is about $150 for barnett xtra disc set up and $30-40 for heavier springs. I'll take a more comfortable ride, anyways $100-$120 difference? Shoot I can easily blow that on a weekend.
Duneme - You actually only run in 3rd? I guess with your gearing, it makes sense. Do you start in 1st or 2nd? It seemed like you shift a couple of times when I've seen you drag.
