Old ds has dual rate back shock spring??

Hey in my ds650 shop manual they got a picture of the back shock and it has two springs its dual rate. How come they stopped making dual rate back shocks on the newer models??

well i've only ridden a 00, 01 and a 02 ds, all of which have the dual rate so i don't know how it would compare to a 04 single rate, i'm sure someone else here has had a 04 and an older ds

Ive had both , i found the progressive spring to have a softer feel to it, bit more "springy"
i dont know why they changed to single spring. some guys i know have removed the top spring and only use the main one , dont know that it helps much , but allows them to lower the bike a lot.
cheers
