New piston, new carb (can only pull start?)
Flat spot on the metering rod facing the motor?
Good fuel level in the float bowl?
Are you running stock cams? Any chance the decompressor is acting up?
What measurement did you finally set the metering rod at?
The pressure calculator at Smokemup says you should have about 162lbs of pressure with a 12:1

Well, since you went back to the stock carb and that didn't solve the prob. And your timming is correct. I would have to ask. When it came to intalling the rings on the piston. Did you get the ring order correct and did you put the dot up on the compression ring and did you install the 3 piece oil ring set correctly?
Did you set the ring end gaps? did you check the piston to wall clearance? Did you hone the cylinder wall at all?

Eagle, I think you may have correctly identified my screw up, I did everything else you mentioned but when I installed the rings I looked for marks but found nothing maybe I just over looked the dots, are there marks on all the rings or just the compression ring? If this turns out to be the problem I am going to have to go into the bathroom look at myself in the mirror and slap myself. One more question do you think I would be safe to reused my head/base gasket? It only ran for 4 minutes. Also do you think I jacked up the rings if I did install them basakwards?
Oh and it had plenty of spark there was enough to light my fire

Both pistons that I got from MrHp / JE had dots identifying the what way to install the rings. And that dot always goes up. I honestly don't know why that is. Perhaps someone else knows the reason. You could call Eric and ask him as well.
After re reading you probs. I think I would get the quad started. Keep it running and spray WD-40 around the intake boot and intake manifold. If the engine stumbles when you do this then you have an intake leak. Thats actually what the symptoms sound like the problem is.
If it was the ring / rings and low compression yes. But I find that one hard to believe. More believable if it was a RWR piston and ring set. Been there done that one But even at that and a busted ring mine still started with no problem.

i think a compression test and/or a leakdown test is in order. sounds like your valves are out of adjustment. possibly timing but you said you got that. also i know this sounds dumb but slap some new plugs in there. you can have strong spark but under compression electricity takes the path of least resistance and sometimes the spark arks up the porcalain. i chased that problem for a day and a half. i had spark, compression, air, and fuel. i could not even pull start it. the plugs were fouled. new plugs and the beast cam to life first try. just something to think about.

The rings have a back cut or a taper to help load the rings to the cyliner wall during compression. That would be the reason for the dot, to mark the top....its sounding like there is more problems than the rings upside down.valve timing or clearance...I know you have checked it, it just seams suspecious...good luck
