I was wondering if my DS has a problem or is it just the nature of the beast, the problem is that if I am running along at about half throttle and then mash on it it stumbles till it hits about 4000 rpms I'm gussing I don't have a tach it just takes off and runs great. Also it really is noticable under load ( going up hill ) Thanks for the help!

What is your altitude? Sounds like the carb settings.

Take your airbox lid off and try to duplicate the stumble. If the problem goes away, the carb needs to be rejetted for your altitude. If the problem gets worse, it would indicate a lean condition that also would require a rejet. And to answer your question, it is definitely not normal, midrange is the DS's strong suit, it should accelerate like a raped ape at that rpm.

Check your carb spring, you may need to stretch it to spec. See other threads for more info.

My elevation is about 4,200 feet above sea level The carb settings are as they where when they left the factory acording to my dealer and I was told that they are set for sea level there and I go to the coast pretty often that is why I haven't messed with the carb that (and I don't know how!) And the problem is still there I do plug checks occasionally but always on top end I didn't know whether you could do it in midrange.

I agree 100% with the carb slide spring as being the culprit. Stretch spring to 135mm. Fixed my stumble problem 100%. BILLB

I had the same problem and it was jetting. My dealer did not jet it for the right altitude.
I am at 3600 ft jetting is now 160 main stock pilot and dropped the c clip on needle by one and there is no hesitation or stumbling. I took it in to the dealer to fix but they did not do anything so I did it myself because the dealer said that is not the problem. It has been running great ever since. Note just check your plugs for the proper color.

When did you buy your DS, and is it still under warranty?? The spring issue is one they ahve resolved in the 2001. It has a new retainer and a different spring. Take it to the dealer if you have any warranty left.
