DS650 Speed?

DS650_TX- no it wont break 85 not in a long shot, just cuz the motorcycle the motor came out of goes over 100 does not mean that the QUAD will. A couple factors you have to consider are: 2 MORE TIRES ON THE ROAD=MORE FRICTION=DRAG, THE POWER TRANSFER IS WAY DIFFERENT FROM THE CYCLE, AND THE DS DOES NOT HAVE DUAL CARBS AND A 5 VALVE HEAD.

RoostKing,
Don't take this the wrong way, but HPD has been getting at least 72 horsepower out of the 400L engines for about 3 or so years now. Granted, the DS 650 makes 54 horsepower stock, but by the time both machines are around 70 or so horsepower you will be further into debt with the DS 650 than you would be with the 400L.
You won't catch me saying anything bad about the suspension on the DS650 though, it gave all of the manufactures a kick in their complacencies. A foot of travel on either end is what a high performance quad SHOULD have. Kind of like what Honda did with their 1978 CR 250R. They raised the bar for all the other manufactures when they came out with almost 11" of suspension front and rear. It shocked the MX world! This is what the DS 650 is doing to the quad world.
If I were you, I would think long and hard about challenging A400L to a drag race on a DS 650. With all of the modification done to his Sport, he is probably pushing around 70 hp. or so. Granted you could probably take him in the whoops, but there is NO way you will out accelerate a quad of equal weight with about 15 more ponies and an auto tranny too.

Mike,
No offense taken, and your point is well taken. I know of A400L's 400, (not in real life of course, but "virtually") and it is a nice machine to say the least. Fast too. I do still wonder how much he has into the 400 to bring it up to its current state of tune. I would guess it is quite a bit. In one other post A400L did say he had more into it than he would have liked (or something to that effect **See below).. But I do know that auto tranny is the way to go in a drag race. Like I have mentioned before, I have a catalog from Ron Wood Racing, who has been building performance parts for the Rotax 650 for a few years now and has quite a few national and international race wins to his credit. Off the top of my head I can remember him winning his class at Pikes Peak for like the last nine years. Now I may have been a bit too optimistic when I said 100 mph would be no problem after some mods, but for sure they will raise the hp of the Rotax. I also agree with you on the point of kicking the other manufacturers on the rear with this outrageous quad. I wonder if Yamaha, Kawasaki, or Honda has had to rethink their plans for a high performance quad after the DS stormed the border. Although I am a huge fan of the DS, frankly I think it may be too big for me(chassis wise, not motor wise!!) I hope this quad will spur the others to step up so we can have yet another glorious offering of high perf. quads!.
Have a great Century,

p.s. Heres A400l's direct quote: "RK, your point is well taken, and true..I do have a lot tied up in my 400, unfortunatley more than I want. Heh, since you seem to like my 400 so much...wanna buy it, say $6999?"

Ranger,
you dont seem to get the point.
1st. The stock DS-650 does not need a 5 valve head or dual carbs to beat the "king of speed" the Banshee. it handles the Banshee quite well in its stock configuration.
2nd. Its nice to have the extra power available.
I have checked out the history0of the motor/trans that powers the DS, and it is TOP SHELF. Will a DS do 100 mph stock? Certainly no. Will a DS do 100 mph after using AVAILABLE MODS. Heck, I would think 100 would be an insult at that point.
This motor has been detuned for the 4 wheeler segment. Remember, the largest motor over offered in any quad is a 600 (yamaha), but its utility. Th DS has 650 cc on tap. Thats power. (But if thats not enuff, there is a 676cc STROKER kit available). Soooo, although correct, i think you are preaching to the choir when talking about the difference between quads and motorcycles.
