Default Quick question ... Fuel Mileage?

Quick question for you racers. Can a stock geared DS with a stock gas tank make 45 miles between gas stops in a desert race? Sorry, I'm a newbie .

i rode 44 with some guys in the snow, it seemed to be working pretty hard so it should be similar in a desert race. i had just put it on reserve so you should make it.

If you are worried about mileage why not just put an IMS baja tank on? 5 gallons instead of 3.5.

yes.....All things considered. Altitude, course, humidity your weight. you should get close to 60
I usually double check during the pre run. It would suck to run out.

No pre-running allowed in this race series, and the first race is tomorrow, so it is a little late for an IMS tank. Thanks for the info.

Dont worry, you'll be fine. I get a little more than 60 miles, stock machine, full throttle 75% of the race.

Thanks everyone. Everything worked out just fine, although it ended up being 48 miles in all. I got a horrible start because I'm such a tard that I forgot to turn the key switch on before the dead engine start. So when they dropped the flag to start the race I was left sitting there pushing the start button and wondering why nothing was happening. By the time I figured out to turn the key on and started my DS I was way way in last place. But I kept working on passing ATVs the whole way, and worked my way up to fifth place, which was good enough for a trophy . The race course was pretty rough, with about 45 miles worth of huge sand whoops, and a few miles of fifth gear muddy roads, with big blown out holes in them that would knock both hands off the handlebars when you hit them in fifth gear (that was exciting). The big DS did great. I hope to have a few pictures on a gallery page by tomorrow.

That sounds like an exciting race. Where was it at?

It was round two of this race series, and was located just north of Delta, UT. Two years ago I raced a USRA desert race and there were 26 ATVs entered. This time we had at least 40 ATVs entered, so interest in this desert race series is growing. The next race in this years series is right next to the Bonneville Salt Flats, near Wendover, UT, and has the potential to be the fastest paced race of the year.
