I believe you move it counter-clockwise. Bump the starter and move it the opposite direction the flywheel turns.

You buy a 10 dollar part. No really it's the woodruff timing key. You can buy one here And you can see how to install it here

Those keys have been known to shear and although Ron woods sells them, they don't recommend using them. I wish someone would make an advanced pickup mount but they don't so I had to modify mine.

you would move the pickup towards the back or counter clockwise, I modified my bracket along time ago(+5 degrees) and really didn't see any gains I could feel, the only thing it did was aggrevate the starter backlash poblem, I took it off and went back to the stock setting.

Major, was that when your bike was stock? I tweaked mine and feel it made a slight difference.

Default advancing the timing question

In a stock bike it's recommended to run low octane fuel to better match the DS's lack of ignition advance. I've always wondered why people wouldn't want to advance timing and then go with higher octane or race gas to get more performance. I've advanced my timing and still haven't had any problems with knocking so I'm guessing their don't have alot of advance.
With 12.5 to 1 were you running premium or blending race gas?
