Keihin 42mm 450R carb - Poor Man's upgrade on DS?
Guys, I don't have a DS I have a Predator. But we share the same carb - the CV Mikuni BSR42. Us predator owners have found a cheap upgrade for performance is adding a stock Keihin 450R carb. This carb is a steal at only $165 new through servicehonda.com. Used, you could probably buy one for $100. It is a 42mm pumper carb too, with a forced-slide that opens with the throttle, not CV style slide. On the predator, this carb mounts like a factory installation! It bolts right up to the manifold and intake. It has a carb-mounted choke lever that is accessable, and you can jetthe needle and main, while still on the bike.
I'm not claiming that this is better than an FCR style carb, or a Lectron for top end performance, but for my quad (bolt on's only) and my style of desert riding, duning, etc. Dollar-for-dollar this is the best mod I've done to my predator. This is on par with piping my quad, in terms of performance and the throttle response is unreal. I've looked around for other carbs, and I still can't believe how cheap this is.
Anyway, the DS is the perfect quad to try this out on, and I'm curious if you guys would be as happy as I am with this cheap upgrade. Anybody try this out yet?

Keihin 42mm 450R carb - Poor Man's upgrade on DS?
Most people are buying a Honda throttle cable & Thumb throttle, some have clamied to use Yamaha thumb and cable. I modded my stock predator cable and use that. This is a wise investment. I had the carb slide mod, hi-po needle, etc....that set up is a joke compared to the response of this carb. The guys putting these carbs on 400ex's generally have them bored/stroked....it might be too much carb for a stock bore 400ex / Z400....not sure though.

Your probably right about it being too much for a stock 400EX. I'm thinking about doing alittle "refreshing" to both my DS, and the EX. I have a 2000 DS, and it just doesn't have the power that I think it should have. It's seen alot of use, so I'm sure it need's some TLC. My EX is basically for the MX track, so I'd like to do a 440, or bigger. Kits for the EX are pretty cheap, and it's a really easy motor to work on. A cheap carb would be a good start!!!

Great info PredFan, this is what the forums are all about.
Not sure about the 400EX but the Z400 (KFX400 in my case) has a BSR36 CV carb. Same as the Pred and DS only smaller. I think it would be too big for anything less then a big bore with cams IMO. I wouldn't mind trying it on my stocker though...you never know, for 165.00 its worth a try.

That being a stock carburetor, with stock thumb throttle etc. would also be a really nice 'girls' upgrade. You know guys, you've got a quad that a girl rides but they complain the TM45 or Lectron thumb tension might be too much? If the Keihin adds a few ponies but keeps a stock throttle feel, that could be a very good upgrade - low cost to boot! Now Bombardier should consider that carburetor for a stock DS (assuming it does actually perform better.)
