Default Looking for a Rev Limiter

If I can get a MSD from ANYWHERE but TVI I may consider getting rid of my Graydon Proline box and getting an MSD. I'm completely overhauling my DS and that question keeps coming up, should I replace my box or not.

Scoundrel your right, why would ANYONE want to rev thier DS past 10k...

Eric Oldham aka. Mr. Horsepower emailed me stating the 650 rev's high enough ( 6200-6500 rpm's ) stock , and i should be shifting sooner if the rpm's are bumping the limiter. I am not a seasoned rider but i feel like there is still some power left on the table. He did go on to recommend the Vortex cdi ( too much cha ching ) . I guess i'll try a used or new $100-$130 unit and see for myself.

I would go used before I did the cheaper unites. I did the cheap procom and I ended up with 1300.00 worth of junk parts from my bike trying to back up when I started it. This is one area I wouldn’t skimp on. It will cost you in the long run.

bigdog, can you explain ^^ ? what happened with it "backing up" ?? 1300 is a lot.... only thing I can think of would be replacing the sprag clutch and some other stuff? I know the sprag alone is like 450 (ridiculous, seeing as how if it was a car part it would be 20 bucks)

I had my sprag go out while running the big gun (not really sure what caused it....but pulled the cdi off anyway) I put in used parts (so already had some wear) but havnt had a problem since. It was me and someoen else who came to the conclusion (with a theory anyways) that the timing change on the cdi's has somthing to do with making the sprags go out.

I just got a replacment unit from Procomm, I was experiencing a wicked kickback during start-up that was probably the same type of thing that caused what bigdogaz went through with his. Hopefully this one will work better or I'll be getting something else.
If I had it to do over again I would have listened the the much more experienced people on this forum and gone with something else to begin with

That’s it exactly! It’s that wicked kick back. It took out the starter gear there are a couple other gears in there as well, plus the flywheel and the pickup sensor. When one of the teeth break off it can do all kinds of damage.
Spend the money on a good CDI or don’t replace it. There are a couple of past threads that talk about that kickback.

But i get kick back occasionally when trying to start the motor cold ( stock-no mods ). Did you all have this problem before the cdi swap or wasn't it as bad before ?

The sprag is a one way bearing of sorts, that when you crank on the starter it grabs the big main gear in there, and turns it.
