I've used VP Racing, Sonoco, and Chevron/Philips synthetic unleaded race gas. I've used roughly 100 octane in all brands in my personal turbocharged car. I was able to run more boost and more ignition timing advance with the Chevron/Philips 101 octane unleaded than with any of the other brands.
For example, with Sonoco and with VP Racing, I saw peak timing advance(my computer in my car automaticly advances timing till it detects knock, then it pulls it back a bit) of 30 degrees with 16 psi of boost.
With Chevron/Philips, I saw peak ignition timing of 32 degrees with 16 psi of boost.

91CavGT, I am sure all the different brands use different mixtures of chemicals to make their own fuel, but do you think your variance in your ability to run higher advance timing could be due to other factors besides the fuel?
Would atmospheric conditions such as cooler temp and high humidity allow you to run higher advance timing with no pre-detonation ?

That is a possibility and it would explain it. Accept for the fact that when I tested the Sonoco gas, it was in the winter time with temps in the 40's. The VP Racing gas was tested with temps in the 60's. The test with the Chevron/Philips gas was in the 70's,
So if anything, this would lead one to a conclusion that the VP Racing unleaded gas has a better knock suppression characteristic than Sonoco and the Chevron/Philips has better knock suppression than the VP Racing unleaded fuel.
But please remember, all of this testing was done with UNLEADED race gas. Leaded race gas by these same manufactures may give differant results.
