Man, I hope I didn't give you messed up info...lol. I'll go back later and reread what I posted!!!
The CDI is a black box, on the left front of the bike, under the tank, and shroud. The rectifier is on the outside, rear of the airbox.
Honestly, either of those could be your problem, but considering the rectifier is the most common ailment, that's what I think your problem is. I troubleshooted for aloooong time, and finally found the rectifier was my issue. I replaced it, and have never had another problem.
Also, I bought one of the gell batterys, and the thing is great. It's sometime's 3 weeks or more before I'll ride my DS, and it start's the first time, everytime.
if you need anymore help, let me know.
Justin

All ds's have regulator/recifier's this means the module rectifies the voltage(changes it from ac to dc) then regulates it and it is one unit!!!!!!!i hope this is a easier explanation for you!!! you can also mount a regulator off onan engines and kohler ind. engines i have used both with good results they are just better quality and a lot smaller. and cheaper

ok so the the regulater/rectifier is the same thing---got it!
now... it is the black box connected to the back of the airbox.with the ridges on it..
is this the culprit that caused all these problems also with the help of a crappy battery.
were does someone get a new/used one.
i see procom has them on ebay but procom scares me.

That's it!!!
As I mentioned before, I would go with the BMW unit. If you have a BMW cycle shop, they can get it to you overnight. You want the unit for the fuel injected BMW650 motorcycle. (shares the same basic motor w/DS) The wiring is different, but is simple to adapt to the DS. I don't know anything about the other rectifier's that were mentioned, but if they're cheaper, then you might want to consider those as well. I don't know where to get those unit's.
As far as the battery is concerned, go with the sunn pc545. Do a GOOGLE search under Sunn battery's, and you should be able to find their site. I think I paid around $70.00 shipped directly to my front door.
