Don't know if this will help any of you... When I took mine apart to fix it I noticed the part numbers and the size cast in to the underside of the piston. I ordered the replacement from bombardier and the two pistons had the same part number but the old piston was 99.99mm and the new piston was 99.98mm. I dont know, but maybe the old piston being larger is expanding to the point that it breaks the rings, since aluminum expands at a different rate than the steel rings do. Also the for those of you who are wondering if your rings are broken mine ran excellent with broken rings, although it did have excessive blow-by, (look for oil in the air box) the thing that kept it from running was a piece of broken ring that bent one of the exaust valves. By the look of the bore the top ring was broken for a long time, and now that it's fixed it runs better than it ever has... so there's something to look forward to at least. As if that will make you feel better about the money it will cost.

alright thats it, the pigs gotta come apart! After reading this more and more with more personal experiences, I feel comfortable (if thats possible) in diagnosing my problem as broken rings. I see NO other possible reason as to why I would have so damn much blow-by (its ridiculous the amount of oil I blow out...crank case pressure has to be pretty high).
The pig seems to run as it normally has (ive been telling everyone "runs like normal") but more and more im wondering if thats so. The thing is, all these cases seem to be with 04's...mine is an 03 baja made in late 02! I honestly hope this is the problem, because I am sick and tired of having my frame and engine coated in oil, and it also gives me an excuse to bump the compression and drop cams in while im in there, assuming there is no damage to the jug/valves etc.

ok guys im not to happy about this but i went to the badlands today and it smelt like i was burning a little bit of antifreeze now from reading the post i've gathered that about the only real symptom is oil coming out of the breather and i have never had any come out so im wondering if i could pull the head off while the engine is still on the bike i've never tried so im not sure and if the ring is bad i want to replace the piston with a 12:1 comp piston and rings and i was wondering how much this would cost for a stock bore?? im going to my uncles to ride tomorrow so then sometime next week im going to drain the oil and see if theres any antifreeze in it
thanks

It is possible to take the head off while the engine is in the bike. You have to take all the front engine mounts loose and loosen the large bolt at the rear of the transmission part of the casing and rock the engine forward. Also the factory service manual is worth the $85, if you don't already have it, especialy when your putting it back together. When I priced pistons a JE 12.5:1 was about $150, but if the rings are toast the bore is probably not in so good of shape either, not trying to be a wet blanket or anything. Good Luck, and I wish you a quick fix, because it sucks when your machine is down.
